Dries and the team have been working diligently to continue preparing the building ready for the new school year. What started off as nothing but a shack, is beginning to change. Dries was adament that this building will eventually be a suitable home for JoshGen school. As he always says, “I see the end result in my head.” I am thankful for that as I sometimes struggle to see past the existing obstacles.

I arrived safely in Frankfurt on Tuesday morning. I managed to find the train station very quickly as well as the platform for my train. That was where the ‘plain sailing’ ended. The DB or Deutsche Bahn is usually exactly on time, but my chosen day of travel was also the day when there was maintenance work on that specific line and include the fact that I got off at a wrong station once, it took me just about five hours.

Today is the big day! After a week of lots of last minute things to do, I am ready to leave for Germany. I am filled with excitement, somewhat nervous, but above all thankful to be blessed in this way.

I picked up a little book titled “Run the Race” when I visited Freda. I found what I read so valuable and relevant to our present situation. The book’s main focus was on us as Christians passing the baton to others and enabling and equipping other believers. One of the stumbling blocks that we encounter to run our race until the end, is times of trials and disappointments.

I received a notification to collect my passport yesterday, just to be told that my application was denied. I was even more shocked when the following was given as a reason:
“There are reasonable doubts as to your intention to leave the territory of the Member States before the expiry if the visa.”

Apologies for Lynette not being here with the writing of the blog . . . so please bear with me.

God is Faithful !!!What an emotional rollercoaster ride! It’s on a high emotional note that I end my week. It started with my coming back, the children writing exams, which escalated into the second week with the packing-up of the books and stuff for the holidays and then the concert and picnic. I somehow got the feeling which adrenaline junkies get.

Lamentations 3:22-26
Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion”, says my soul, “therefore I hope in Him!” The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

It has been a busy week for both of us. The school concert was on Friday and the picnic on Saturday. Dries will write and tell you all about that. Watch this space.
Load shedding on my side and continuous power cuts on Dries’s side made everything more challenging. At least I knew exactly when the electricity would go off. I managed to get my paper work for my Schengen visa done and printed. I have to go for the interview tomorrow. I find that I am somewhat nervous, because there were endless demands for documents and then to be told that all of it won’t necessarily ensure you of a visa. Please pray with me.

Dries is back home! I think it still feels a little unreal to him. He remarked that the heat and humidity will take some getting used to. He left South Africa on Friday evening wearing all of his winter gear. Please pray for him as he will start on his longterm visa application next week. His passport and transformable visa was closely scrutinized on the airport on Nosy Be and the officials weren’t happy with what they saw on the computer. So much so that the supervisor was called. He was finally allowed in and we know that it is God who is in control and that He will make a way.

Happiness is…….
to be able to show a negative PCR test. And once again that was not the case with Dries. Therefore, he could not fly on Friday and will have to stay for another week. Well, in theory that is. Mind you, I think that nasty cold we had, was probably Covid. I wonder how much money had been spent on never ending tests and penalties for changing flight dates.

What a joy and a privilege to have friends in Christ who encourage and advise us by the power of the Holy Spirit. A couple of days ago, it was clear to us that JoshGen School would have to close its doors after twenty years. I found myself either crying or close to tears most of the time. Therefore, it was a surprise when Euphrasie sent me a message and reminded me about a very small piece of land we went to look at a few months ago. At the time, we considered it too small and access was also a problem.

You know that you are overstaying your welcome in a place when the apartment block you live in, catches fire. On Friday at about 5 o’ clock, we heard people yelling down below in the street. This is nothing unusual for this neighbourhood and I put it down to the week-end excesses starting early. When more voices joined in, I thought that it called for a quick glimpse out the window and received quite a fright when we realised that people were urging the inhabitants to get out as the building was on fire. This warranted some action on our part and we grabbed a few things, passports being the most important and fled the apartment.

The news that we have been waiting for finally arrived this week and prompted us into action, because lots need to happen in a short time. Air Ethiopia will resume flights to Nosy Be from 14 May. We are waiting for the final confirmation of flight dates, but would like to fly out by the first week of June.

Winter is definitely closing in. We are spending a few days at Highlands Lodge in the Outeniqua pass before heading back to Cape Town. We are privileged to be blessed by our friends Liaan and Elizna for making this getaway possible. It is really cold and the fireplace has been going for most of the time.
Madagaskar: Lynette’s Mada news April 2022
For the first time since I arrived, things seem to move forward. Madagascar has finally conceded to allowing other airlines to fly after they had officially opened the boarders more than a month ago, but only allowed Air France entry. We prefer to go back with Air Ethiopia due to their generous baggage allowance. No dates for flights have been announced, but we are convinced that it will be within the next month. Dries also received his second police clearance certificate, so in theory, he is set to go.

I know that there has not been an update from our side for a while, so to dispel any ‘fake news’, let me share with you what is happening.
During the week, a date has been given for the re-opening of Madagascar’s borders. Starting from 5 March theoretically, flights from other countries apart from France should open up. No indication has been given when this will include Nosy Be, but we are hopeful that it will be by the end of March or April.

I joked with the Saturday Rangers last week when we prayed for those who had birthdays during the week that I also have an anniversary of some sorts. Dries has been away from home for one whole year now. I still wonder how that is even possible and how Covid 19 was allowed to ruin people’s lives on so many levels. I refrain from dwelling on the fact that I don’t know how we can ever recover financially. Gabriel has not seen maintenance for a year now, not to even speak of the Land Rover. I try my best to do what I can, but my efforts in this regard are merely superficial. So when my quad bike broke down on the road three weeks ago, it was a case of the proverbial ‘the last straw to break the camel’s back’, scenario.
