It is back to school for the teachers on Monday. The first couple of days will be taken up by cleaning and organising. As it is the dry season, the battle is now against the dust which forces itself into every nook and cranny.

I printed the first visuals of the Reading Rocket reading lessons and that in itself was an adventure. The colour printing of the A3 visuals was the easy part. The only place who did A3 lamination was just around the corner from the printing place, but in a dark and dirty alley. The inside was so small that the customers had to line up outside. I was offered a seat though, but had to draw my feet up every now and then when the space was needed to put something. The lamination machine, yes I have to call it a machine, because it looked ancient. It had dials and switches which the operator enjoyed turning and fiddling with like he was a DJ. I had no confidence in this archaelogical relic to do the job, but of course I was proven wrong. The lamination was perfect. So, I’ll be the first customer on Monday for the next round.

The theme for the teachers this year will be, ‘Building on a firm Foundation’. I feel like we should go back to basics and focus more on doctrinal truths. The endless ‘little encouraging messages’ which seem to be the usual theme, really don’t cut it. People need to be challenged and here the constant battle is the culture. Even as Christians, many people put the culture before the Bible. Please pray for us as we start the new school year. We are concerned about the spiritual life of some of our teachers and how that will affect their teaching and ultimately the spiritual growth of the children.

Dries and I were packed up at the boat, ready to head for home the week before when the tyre that Dries had had fixed the previous day, gave up the ghost with a swoosh. The ‘tyre specialist’ also managed to ruin the spare, which left us stuck at the boat. It was PM to the rescue when he brought us a spare wheel from a friend who has a Land Rover. As we sat all packed up and nowhere to go waiting for PM, Dries also had a look of …well, hopefully not ready to give up the ghost.

We are very excited about our visitor from South Africa. Elizabeth will arrive on 8 September and spend two weeks with us to experience the ministry and life on the island. Please pray for her preparation and that it will be a time of blessing and refreshing for all of us.

For the most part of this school holiday, I have either been cleaning and painting on the boat or sat in front of the computer helping with the creation of a French version of the Reading Rocket’s Alphabet program. Honestly though, I sometimes prefer the cleaning and painting part as sitting in front of a computer has never really been my favourite thing to do. I have learnt a lot though and we are looking forward to see the fruit of our labour. Please pray for Eleanor from Burundi and me as we are doing the final corrections.

Since our school does not have computers or electricity for that matter, I am busy re-working the lessons into a flip chart version. I want to include a Bible verse and story to go with the lesson as well as group activities. To be honest with you, there is not much time left before school starts and I am hard-pressed to be ready in time. The printing of the material will be very expensive and if there are people who want to be involved in this project, please contact me.

As I have shared before, we had big problems getting our monthly support from South Africa. Long story short, a new account had to be created on the South African side, because the documentation to authorise the new account was outdated and could not be used anymore. The new account is finally ready after months of frustration. Alice came to visit me and asked if I were aware that I feature on a billboard in town. Well, I thought that she must have it completely wrong, because that could not be possible. It turned out that she was correct. Alice and I were invited to go on an e-bike outing a few years ago and I still remember how much fun it was. So, now I am on a billboard advertising e-bike trips. The board is right in front of the cemetery, probably why I never saw it and you are just able to recognise me under the c and the t of ‘élécrique’.

Dries has another busy and tiring week ahead of him. Please pray for perseverance and strength as he will go to the boat by himself as I …. yes, you guessed it, would be sitting in front of the computer.
