Sendingnuus Madagaskar – The Week 25 January 2026

Cyclone Fytia made landfall on the western coast of Madagascar on Saturday afternoon. It passed overland and then started building up strength again in the ocean as it now moves down south. There was very strong wind and flooding in places like Majunga. We experienced some gusts of wind and heavy rain, but as we found ourselves on the outskirts of the cyclone’s trajectory, it was nothing serious. I was just about to start my Bible Study Merit at the Ranger meeting when the weather turned dark and we decided to pack up and let everyone get home as soon as possible. Dries shared a Gospel presentation by using Romans 6:23, first of all to remind the Rangers of what Jesus had done for us and then I encouraged them to use this method to explain the Gospel to others.

Our peaceful island seems to be changing. There were five murders recently and all drug related. Two pharmacies and the main hospital reported burglaries. People brought a petition to the mayor to demand that something gets done before it is too late. Well, the authorities who probably have no idea how to deal with any of this, called for a curfew and everybody needs to tucked up at home by 10 in the evening. This obviously did not go down well with people who insist and rightly so, that the police should step up and protect them. We talked about this at Rangers and that the only solution to all of this is Jesus and that they need to be ready to share their faith.

The boatyard owner, Bruno, donated an old water tank to the school. It needs a ‘little’ attention as Dries says, but when he told me that he will bring it home during the week, I did wonder how, as the Land Rover is full of tools and building materials. As they say, ‘where there is a will, there is a way”! He had to wait for lunch time when there would be no police on the road.

This is my ‘pet’ gecko. I saw him during the week drinking water from the water filter’s tap. That was after he had his breakfast which consists of a drop of honey.
