Dries’ 70th birthday turned out to be a rather subdued and quiet day. The main reason for that being the news about the valuation of Gabriel which we heard on Friday.

This week’s news might sound like lamentations all around, but the difficulties and spiritual attacks leave us somewhat bruised and despondent. We have been encouraged by testimonies from missionaries in other countries this week and listening to sermons always strengthen us.

The highlight of the week was that after almost a year, Jirama finally connected the school to the municipal water supply. Don’t let the words ‘connect’ and ‘supply’ conjure up images of water gushing and buckets overflowing. So far, we had none of that. We were expecting to be limited to have ‘supply’ at night, due to the low water pressure, but a couple of liters a week, went even beyond our usual careful optimism. What to do next? No idea, but it adds to the list of frustrations. I felt sorry for Dries who was so excited by the prospect of a full water tank and not to have to rely on the unfriendly neighbour’s well anymore.

We were packed and ready to go to Ampamata on Thursday morning. Nazaire, the boat owner, gave us a bigger boat this time as we had to bring the panels to fix the walls, tables and benches and a new blackboard. We have been praying a lot for Ampamata. It felt lately as if there are constantly new challenges and sometimes we feel to simply leave them to carry on by themselves.

I always thought that it was who you knew around here that opened doors, but we discovered during the week that what you wear might play a role. We don’t get pulled over by the police often, but on our way to a Ranger meeting, a young officer made a big show with his whistle blowing and waved us off the road. We did not recognise him and assumed that he must have been new. When he came towards the Landrover from the back, he looked in at the driver’s side, suddenly jumped to attention, saluted and with what almost resembled a curtsy, waved us through.

It’s been almost two years since we had PM, Thomas and Alice together at home. The boys are all grown up and Alice is not far behind. Like all young people, they have to make their way in life and we pray that they will continue to make good decisions. We will always be there for them though, but we are at peace that God has a fufure for them.

Better start on a positive note…
Dries managed to get both of Gabriel’s outboard motors working well and he is building a support out of very strong wood and old car tyres in anticipation of taking the boat out of the water.

Dries and I celebrated our 25 years wedding anniversary during the week. But for one of those years, all had been spent in Madagascar. We were basically newly weds when we set out for the mission field. Some might think this to have been a double stress ; getting used to married life as well as settling into a new country. I think that in the end, married life did not nearly present so many challenges as coping with full time missionary life.

The last two weeks seemed to fly by in record time. Preparation for school exams, Ranger meetings and Dries spending a lot of time on one of the boat engines contributed. He had some help at the end, with Thomas lending a hand with starting the outboard. Yes, Thomas is here for a three week visit and it was evident that he has matured a lot. He will return to England and continue to work and save some money until he will be sure what he wants to do. Coming back to Nosy Be and starting a business seems to be an option, as he appears to be very homesick.

We usually don’t organise outdoor activities for the school and the Rangers during the rainy season, but we thought that it was time for a picnic with the Expedition and Adventure groups on Saturday. Dries transported all the stuff with the Land Rover and the rest of us walked. We had to trudge through the mud at some point, but it was a lovely walk and even the intermittent rain could not put a damper on the fun. We had the place to ourselves as it does not seem to ever have any tourists. A couple of cows and some guinea fowl were the only company we had.

Intense tropical cyclone Freddy passed over Madagascar in record time and ended up causing less death and destruction than anticipated. People had enough time to prepare, strengthen roofs and kept away from the sea. Here in the north, we did not experience much of its effects. We had very strong wind one night, but the ropes with which Dries had tied down the mast of the boat, held without problem.

Another cyclone is heading Madagascar’s way. At this time it looks like one of the worst cyclones to hit Madagascar with a rating of 7 on the Dvorak scale, 8 being the highest classification. Cyclone Freddy,(I think the name should also be upgraded to Fred considering its strength), will make landfall towards the south of the country after impacting Mauritius and Reunion, move across the country and at this stage appears to then head on to Mozambique. We won’t really experience the effect of this cyclone, being right up in the north, but please pray with us for the people who live in its path. If the predicted course will be followed, the outcome for Madagascar would be devastating.

It was a tough week. I felt particularly sorry for Dries who was mourning the death of his brother while trying to be a support to the rest of the family and at the same time dealing with the many problems we face at the moment.

Yesterday morning we set off for the north of the island to go and find a suitable place to take Gabriel out of the water for some major maintenance work. Let me just backtrack a little, to put you in the picture.

Thank you for praying for us. The storm quickly started to dissipitate once it made landfall yesterday and soon turned into a moderate tropical storm. We had less rain than expected, but strong wind that came in gusts. We were left without power after a tree fell on a power line, but that was fixed remarkably quickly.

We ended 2022 and started the New Year in the same way; finishing the toilets at the school. Definitely not a glamorous way to welcome 2023. Let’s hope that it does not set the tone for the rest of the year. We only had a week to do the work while the children were on holiday. Norbert sacrificed his holiday and we also had two of PM’s workers. Dries had to put a gate on the toilets, because the people around the school seem to think that the toilets are public property. Obviously, we cannot allow this, but it does not improve relationships with the neighbours. We have to start working on a fence, as that will solve the problem. “Good fences, make good neighbours.” Let’s hope that will apply in this case.

Hebrews 12:1-2
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of God.”
