In die kerkjaar is daar tye soos Lydingstyd, die groot Lydingsweek en Paasfees. Hierdie tye is onthou tye wat ruimtes is wat ons uitnooi om na te dink aan wat Christus vir ons aan die kruis bewerk het en hoe dit ons vrygemaak het, om te lééf.

“Niemand soos die Here”, is vrygestel juis om mense te help met hierdie outhoutye.

Die opname is in Maart 2017 in Stellenbosch deur Helmut Meijer gedoen. Helmut het reeds as vervaardiger, verskeie toekennings ontvang met sy produksies saam met kunstenaars soos Retief Burger, Louis Brittz & Heinz Winkler. Helmut was ook saam met Neil deel van die “In Verwondering” projek in Sutherland saam met Louis Brittz en Retief Burger wat vir ‘n SAMA vir beste Gospel album genomineer was.

Jandré Viljoen sing saam met Neil hierdie lied. Hy is ‘n aanbiddingsleier in Leefkerk (Wellington Moedergemeente se aanddiens) en ook die hoofsanger van die groep Klipkreet. Jandré was voorheen lid van die Drakensberg se Seunskoor en het onlangs sy teologiese studies voltooi nadat hy as jeugwerker in Wellington Moedergemeente gewerk het.

Ons wou graag werk daaraan om ‘n klank te skep wat eie is aan ons gemeente en wat aard in ons Suid-Afrikaanse konteks. Die kerk se storie in die wêreld is nie ‘n nuwe storie nie – dit is ‘n eeue ou verhaal. Met die opname van “Niemand soos die Here” het ons beginsels geleen uit kerkmusiek oor die eeue om ons te help skep aan ‘n klank wat herinner aan waar ons vandaan kom, maar tog ook iets vars bevat om uitdrukking te gee aan dit wat ons graag aan God wil verwoord. Ons wil deur die lied ‘n gasvrye ruimte skep waar mens vir God kan ontmoet.

Agtergrond en Komponis

“Saggies en Teer,” wat oorspronklik bekend was as “Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling,” is ‘n klassieke uitnodigingslied uit die 19de eeu. Dit is geskryf deur Will Lamartine Thompson (1847-1909), ‘n komponis van gospel-, sekulêre en patriotiese liedere.

Omdat sy vroeëre liedere verwerp is, het Thompson sy eie musiekuitgewery gestig en “Saggies en Teer” is die eerste keer gepubliseer in ‘n versameling getiteld Sparkling Gems, Nos. 1 en 2. Dit het vinnig ‘n gewilde lied geword en is in baie kerkliedboeke opgeneem.

Thompson is geïnspireer om homself aan skryfwerk te wy terwyl hy ‘n byeenkoms van die gewilde evangelis Dwight L. Moody (1837-1899) bygewoon het. Toe Moody in die hospitaal sterwend was, het hy vir Thompson gesê: “Will, I would rather have written ‘Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling’ than anything I have been able to do in my whole life”

Die libretto vir Messias is met die grootste sorg ontwerp en gekies uit die Nuwe en Ou Testamente deur Charles Jennens (1700—73), ‘n literêre geleerde en redakteur van Shakespeare se toneelstukke wat opgevoed is aan Balliol College, Oxford. Ten spyte van sy meriete en bekwaamheid, het Jennens nooit ‘n graad of veel erkenning van die samelewing verwerf nie, omdat hy ‘n nie-jurielid was en geweier het om die Hannoveraanse dinastie as wettige erfgename van die troon van Brittanje te erken. Tog kon Jennens ook nie ‘n Jakobiet (d.w.s. ‘n ondersteuner van die afgesette Katolieke Stuarts) wees nie, omdat hy ‘n onwrikbare Protestant was.

Teologiese konsep

Die teologiese konsep vir Jennens se Skrifversameling was anders as enige oratorium (Engels of andersins) wat nog geskryf is. Dit was ontwerp as ‘n sublieme manifest van die goddelikheid van Jesus Christus, deels as ‘n reaksie op die toename van gerasionaliseerde ateïsme en Deïsme.

As ‘n toegewyde Hoë Anglikaan het Jennens Skrifgedeeltes uit veertien boeke van die Ou en Nuwe Testamente gekies en sodoende ‘n mikrokosmos van Christelike leerstellings en geloof aangebied wat ‘n gepaste plegtige vermaak vir die Lent was. Die titelblad van die woordeboek het ‘n leuse uit Virgil se Vierde Ecloog bevat: “Majora canamus” (‘Laat ons van groter dinge sing’), geplaas langs Bybelse aanhalings uit 1 Timoteus 3:16 en Kolossense 2:3 wat verduidelik het dat hierdie ‘groter dinge’ die wysheid en kennis van die Christelike geloof is.

Die gekorrigeerde uitgawe van die woordeboek wat in Londen (1743) gepubliseer is, is waarskynlik noukeuriger deur Jennens toesig gehou; Dit het die inhoud van die drie dele onderverdeel in ‘tonele’ met Romeinse syfers as hoofletters:

Deel 1 begin met Ou-Testamentiese profesieë oor Christus se koms en oorweeg wat die koms van die Messias vir die wêreld sal voorspel; dit word gevolg deur profesieë oor die maagdelike geboorte, en dan die pastorale toneel waarin die engele aan die herders verskyn en Jesus se geboorte verkondig; die eerste deel sluit af met ‘n oorweging van Christus se verlossende wonderwerke tydens sy aardse bediening.

Deel 3 pas die leerstelling van fisiese opstanding en geestelike verlossing op ons almal toe, en vermaan prominent die mens se sterflikheid en die Oordeelsdag, en sluit die oratorium af met aanbiddende lofprysing van Jesus Christus.
